Reisert may start late

Although the University of New Hampshire returns nine defensive starters from last year’s team, it’s unlikely that one of those starters will be cleared to play when UNH opens its season at Maine on Aug. 30 (7 p.m.).

Defensive end Kyle Reisert suffered an injury to his left knee during last year’s game against Elon. The injury required surgery in November, and UNH coach said Reisert may not be available for game action until the end of September.

“Kyle had a knee injury that he’s still rehabbing,” UNH defensive coordinator John Lyons said at the team’s media day Friday. “He’s going to miss a little bit of time here early. Kyle really gives us a lot of flexibility because going into last year he was probably our best end, but he was also big and strong and smart enough to play inside in passing situations.”

USA Today named Reisert New Hampshire’s Defensive Player of the Year following his senior season at Plymouth Regional High School. He was selected to play in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl and in the CHaD New Hampshire East-West New Hampshire All-Star Game.

Reisert, a senior, has been a key member on the defensive side of the ball for UNH in each of the last three seasons, and has been productive in the classroom as well. He was named the 2017-18 Colonial Athletic Association’s Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
