Top 10 Games from 2018: No. 3

No. 3: Pinkerton 20, Londonderry 14

Pinkerton’s dominance over Londonderry continued on this day in muddy and windy conditions at Londonderry High School.

The fourth-seeded Astros (7-3) broke a 14-14 tie when Gannon Fast scored on a 1-yard run with 8:06 to play, and then stiffened on defense when the top-seeded Lancers (8-2) drove to the Pinkerton 9-yard line on their final possession.

Pinkerton took over on downs after a screen pass from Londonderry quarterback Evan Cormier to Jeff Wiedefeld failed to pick up any yardage on fourth and goal from the Pinkerton 9 with 1:21 left. The victory advanced the Astros to the Division I semifinals.

It was Pinkerton’s second victory over top-seeded Londonderry during the 2018 season. The Astros beat the Lancers 34-14 during the regular season and raised their edge in the all-time series to 32-6.

Among the game-changing plays in the second half was a 72-yard interception return by Pinkerton linebacker Jake MacInnis, and a personal-foul penalty on Londonderry four plays before Fast scored the game’s final TD. Instead of having third and long at the Londonderry 20, the penalty made it third and 1 from the Londonderry 10.

Both Londonderry touchdowns came on passes from Cormier to Cole Keegan. The first TD pass covered 6 yards, came with seven seconds left in the first half and helped make it a 7-7 game at halftime. The second TD pass was good for 14 yards and came with 1:21 left in the third quarter. It was 14-14 after Zack Chau’s second point-after kick.

Fast scored Pinkerton’s first TD on a 1-yard run with 9:46 remaining in the first half. The TD was the 11th play of a drive that began on the Pinkerton 4-yard line.
