MASCAC honors Shea, Lewis

PLYMOUTH – Days after a 42-0 shutout over Fitchburg State, a pair of Plymouth State University football teammates were honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with inclusion on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Senior Matt Shea (Atkinson) earned the honor for the second straight week, while junior Terrell Lewis (New Boston) was recognized for the first time.

Shea made a game-high eight tackles and added a pair of interceptions, including a 40-yard touchdown return, to lead Plymouth State to its first shutout of the season. His first interception came late in the first half, stopping the Falcons’ best scoring chance at the PSU 5-yard line. His second interception came on Fitchburg’s next possession when he jumped in front of a pass and returned it 40 yards into the end zone.

Shea, a 5-foot-8 defensive back, ranks third in the league with 43 total tackles, while his 8.6 tackles per game are the fourth most in the conference. He also ranks among the top six in the MASCAC in interceptions, pass breakups and blocked kicks.

Lewis caught three balls for a career-high 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the PSU offense kicked into high gear after a slow start. With less than two minutes left in the first half  Lewis, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver, broke free down the left sideline on a third-and-10 and caught a deep ball in stride before cruising into the end zone for a 70-yard score. He added a 24-yard touchdown catch on the Panthers’ first possession of the second half when he slipped past his defender on a play action pass to make it 21-0.

Lewis leads the Plymouth State wide receiving crew with an average of 40.4 receiving yards per game, while his three receiving touchdowns are tied for sixth-most in the league. He has found the end zone in two of the last three games.

Plymouth State (4-1, 2-1 MASCAC) heads to Westfield State for a MASCAC clash with the Owls on Saturday at noon.
