Long in running for Mackey Award

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.  Exeter resident Hunter Long, a tight end in his junior season at Boston College, has been named a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end in the nation.

The John Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey.

Long, who played at Exeter High School, has been the top receiving tight end in the nation in 2020. He leads all tight ends nationally in receptions (57) and receiving yards (685). He is eighth among all tight ends nationally with five touchdown receptions and 10th among all tight ends with seven receptions of 20-plus yards.

He is second in Boston College single-season history for receptions by a tight end, trailing only former consensus All-America tight end Pete Mitchell’s 66 receptions in 1993.

Long led Boston College with 509 receiving yards in 2019. He finished the season with 28 receptions and two receiving touchdowns. His 72-yard touchdown reception at Louisville was the longest reception of his career a year ago.
