JMU, Elon open with wins

Elon 26, Davidson 23

ELON, N.C. – A touchdown pass from Joey Baughman to Donovan Williams with 32 seconds left helped the No. 21 Elon University football team to a 26-23 victory over Davidson in the Phoenix’s 2021 spring season opener on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.

Baughman completed 18-of-22 passes for 173 yards and scored two touchdowns in his first career start. Jaylan Thomas rushed for a game-high 129 yards and a score, and Cole Coleman led the Phoenix defense with 17 tackles.

Elon came out of the second half with a 48-yard rushing touchdown from Thomas to trim Davidson’s lead to 20-18 at the 13:04 mark in the third period. The Wildcats then capped off a 16-play, 56-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal to go up by five, 23-18, with 4:53 left in the third quarter.

James Madison 52, Morehead State 0

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Fourth-ranked James Madison gained 369 yards on the ground and rushed for six scores en route to a 52-0 season-opening victory against Morehead State on Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.

The Dukes moved to 1-0, playing in the program’s first regular-season spring game, while the Eagles fell to 0-1. JMU moved to 8-2 all-time against MSU, having now won five straight in the series.

Four backs each ran for more than 60 yards: Percy Agyei-Obese tallied a game-high 116 yards and a touchdown, Solomon Vanhorse had 82 yards and a score on five carries, and both Latrele Palmer (90) and Jawon Hamilton (68) found the end zone twice.

Cole Johnson was 10-of-14 for 147 yards and a touchdown, connecting on a 52-yard pass to Kris Thornton for his first passing score of the year. Thornton finished the game with three catches for a game-high 90 yards and the score. JMU’s quarterbacks found 11 different pass catchers in the game.
