Shrine Camp: Day 1

69th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl

The Vermont and New Hampshire Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl teams reported to Castleton (Vt.) University on Sunday. This year’s game will be be played Saturday (noon) at Castleton. … Former Lebanon coach Chris Childs is New Hampshire’s head coach. Craig Sleeman of BFA-Fairfax is Vermont’s head coach. Childs guided New Hampshire to a 45-21 victory as New Hampshire’s head coach for the 2011 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. “Back then we broke the team completely in half and had 18 on offense and 18 on defense and I’m not doing it that way this time,” Childs said. “We’re drilling kids on both sides of the ball.” … After check-in New Hampshire had two practices Sunday. Childs said New Hampshire will practice in full pads during its offensive practice Monday morning. The team will have a defensive practice Monday afternoon, and then work on special teams Monday night. “Quite a few of these kids came from a Wing-T offense, so they seem to be picking it (the offense) up quick,” Childs said. “Right now I would say I have 85 percent of our offense in already by having the two practices prior to the Shrine Camp and then what we did (Sunday). It’s just a matter of fine-tuning things. Having those kids come from the Wing-T system seems to have helped, for sure.” … The New Hampshire players swapped helmet stickers before Sunday’s first practice. … Childs said he hopes to have his starters finalized following Wednesday’s last practice, or Thursday at the latest. He added that there will likely be at least a handful of players who will play both offense and defense. “The fewer kids we have go both ways, the better off we’ll be for sure,” he said. …  Vermont is expected to run the Wishbone offense. “I find it hard to believe he’s going to run option out of it,” Childs said. “That’s hard to teach in six days, but maybe I’m wrong. My guess is he’s going to try and run power football at us. That’s usually not the Vermont strategy.”… Tickets for Saturday’s game can be ordered online at www.shrinemaplesugarbowl.com.
