Shrine Camp: Day 2

70th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl

New Hampshire practiced three times Monday in preparation for Saturday’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bow at Castleton University (11:30 a.m. kickoff). “We did a little bit of Thud, just trying to execute some plays at a little higher speed,” New Hampshire coach Chris Sanborn said. “It was good, bad and the ugly. Some of it looked good. Some of it was not so good. We’re getting there. Making progress. You always feel like you’re behind schedule, but we’re only 48 hours in. I think by the end of the day (Tuesday) or Wednesday we’ll know who our starters are.” …  Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl media day will be held Tuesday. … Sanborn said Epping/Newmarket Jordan Espo, a running back/defensive back, was held out of Monday’s final practice with a hip flexor. … Londonderry’s Jack Drabik and Plymouth’s Gianni Ciotti will be the team’s place-kickers, and St. Thomas’ Devon Paquette will handle the punting duties. … Tackle Aidan Monaghan (Merrimack Valley), tackle Joe Pickett (St. Thomas), guard Owen Simon (Exeter), Noah Blake (Concord), guard Lucas Smith (Stevens), center Caden Sanborn (Plymouth), center Hayden Froumy (Exeter), tight end Austin Wells (Concord) and Henry D’Antonio (Sanborn) are among those battling for playing time up front. … Jackson Sumner, a wide receiver/defensive back from Champlain Valley Union High School, was Vermont’s 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year, but is entering his senior year and is not eligible to play in Saturday’s game. Exeter beat Champlain Valley 35-21 last season. … New Hampshire has won the last three games and leads the series 50-16-2. … Tickets for Saturday’s game can be ordered online at www.shrinemaplesugarbowl.com.
