Shrine Camp: Day 4

70th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl

The following players will serve as the Vermont captains for this year’s game: Jonah Bassett (Rutland), Caden Haskell (Bellows Falls), Miles Kaplan (Burr and Burton), Jordan D’Amico (Mount Mansfield) and Dawson Wilkins (St. Johnsbury). New Hampshire’s captains will be announced Thursday morning. … Windsor’s Greg Balch is Vermont’s head coach. Balch led Windsor to undefeated seasons and the Division III title in 2021 and 2022. He steered Vermont to a 24-13 victory in the 2018 game, which is Vermont’s most recent victory. … Although Windsor runs the Wing-T, Balch said the receiver position may be Vermont’s strength on offense. “We have some tall, fast, athletic kids at that position and looking forward to see what they can do,” he said. “We feel like we have some depth there.” The receiver group includes Bassett, Tristan Evans (Brattleboro), Alex Provost (Champlain Valley), Zack Wilson (Spaulding), Josh Brown (Essex) and Penn Riney (Middlebury).  … “I think we’re strong in the trenches on both sides of the ball,” Balch said. “We’re a pretty deep group with all the backs on both sides of the ball, so I think we’re feeling pretty good about that as well.” … This year’s game will feature 12-minute quarters. … Vermont has four quarterbacks on its roster. “We’re trying to narrow down who’s going to get the majority of the snaps,” Balch said. “It’ll be more than one, for sure.” …  New Hampshire has won the last three games and leads the series 50-16-2. … Tickets for Saturday’s game can be ordered online at www.shrinemaplesugarbowl.com.
