TOP 10 NHIAA GAMES FROM 2023
No. 10: Campbell 6, Trinity 0
Our countdown starts with a regular season game that was the first of two meetings between teams that faced each other in the Division III championship game.
There were wet conditions in Litchfield for this contest and that heavily favored each defense.
Nick Hershberger scored the game’s only touchdown on a 2-yard run with 8:27 to play. The TD capped a nine-play, 46-yard drive. Trinity hadn’t allowed a touchdown in its previous four games.
The Cougars were facing a fourth-and-1 situation on their own 35-yard line with 3 minutes and 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but chose to not punt the ball away. Instead, Campbell gave the ball to Scott Hershberger, who powered his way forward for a first down that allowed the Cougars to run out the clock.
Campbell committed three of the game’s five turnovers, but all three came in a scoreless first half. Trinity fumbled the ball away twice in the second half. The second lost fumble occurred on a first-down play from the Campbell 12-yard line with 5:26 left in the fourth quarter.
Four plays earlier, Trinity quarterback Jack Service (8 of 17 for 107 yards) connected with DeVohn Ellis for a 40-yard gain on a third-and-15 play.
Trinity, which lost to Campbell in the 2022 Division III championship game, earned some revenge by posting a 42-12 victory when the teams met to determine the 2023 Division III champion.
