TOP 10 NHIAA GAMES FROM 2023
No. 7: Newport 13, Somersworth 12
This was the first of two meetings between these teams, who also faced each other in the Division IV championship game.
Newport grabbed a 13-point lead in the first half and hung on for the win.
The Tigers opened the scoring on Kyle Ashley’s 16-yard touchdown run, and pushed the lead to 13-0 when Ashley tossed a halfback pass to Aidan Couitt for a 51-yard TD pass with 27 seconds left in the first half.
Somersworth cut its deficit to 13-6 after a 45-yard TD run by Seth Worell with 9:45 remaining in the third quarter.
Kayden Bickford’s 26-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter made it a one-point game, but a bad snap resulted in a failed conversion attempt and left Newport with a 13-12 lead.
Somersworth won the rematch 13-12, a victory that earned the Hilltoppers their third straight Division IV championship. Both programs will move to Division III next season.
