Spaulding turns to Hodsdon

Dan Hodsdon said he was looking forward to being a varsity head coach again, but he wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon.

Hodsdon, who was Somersworth’s head coach from 2010 to 2019, will serve as Spaulding’s head coach this season after former Spaulding coach and athletic director Kevin Hebert announced his resignation.

Hodsdon was an assistant coach on Hebert’s staff last season.

“I didn’t even know until two weeks ago that this was going to be a possibility,” Hodsdon said. “It wasn’t something that was on my radar. Being a head coach is something I wanted to do again and with the start of the season so close I felt an obligation to step forward and do the right thing.”

Hodsdon, 47, lives in Nottingham and works as the out-of-district coordinator for the Rochester School Department. He spent four years as an assistant coach at Exeter before he joined the Spaulding staff before the 2023 season.

Hodsdon and Hebert were teammates on the football team at Somersworth High School.

Hebert said Hodsdon was hired on an interim basis, but Hodsdon said he’s not opposed to keeping the job long term.

“We’ll see at the end of the year,” Hodsdon said. “I’ve learned a lot the last five years, four in Exeter and my one year at Spaulding. Having that year under my belt I have some connection with the kids, and it’s great to do one of things I love — coaching football.”
