Spaulding’s Hebert resigns

Kevin Hebert has stepped down as Spaulding High School’s athletic director and varsity football coach. His last day as athletic director will be Aug. 16, the first day of NHIAA football practice.

Hebert, who lives in Dover, said his decision was made primarily for family reasons. He has a son who will be a freshman at Dover High School this fall and two young daughters.

He will be starting a new job with the Dover Parks and Recreation Department later this month.

“I’ve spent 30 percent of my life in that building, but this will be a good change of pace,” Hebert said. “It’ll be better for my kids, better for my wife. People I lean on kept reminding me that you only get one chance to see your kids grow up and they’ll all be doing things I don’t want to miss.”

Hebert, 47, became Spaulding’s athletic director in 2010. He added head varsity football coach to his job description in 2018, after spending five years as an assistant coach with the Spaulding program.

Before becoming Spaulding’s athletic director, Hebert was the head coach at Somersworth — his alma mater — for 10 years. He was also the head coach for the East in the CHaD New Hampshire East-West All-Star Game twice.

“It was a rough thing to do, to go in there and tell the team about this, but they understood when I told them it was about my family,” Hebert said. “I do want to say it was a great privilege to coach in the CHaD game and meeting so many kids from different programs. Who knows, in the future maybe that’s a way for me to stay in coaching without doing it full time.

“I enjoyed going to work everyday as AD. There’s some things about that job I’m going to miss, and some things I’m not going to miss.”

Hebert said Dan Hodsdon will serve as Spaulding’s coach on an interim basis this year. Hodsdon was an assistant under Hebert last season. He previously served as the head coach at Somersworth and was an assistant in Exeter before he joined the Spaulding program.

“With Danny taking over there will be some continuity,” Hebert said. “Now I just have to try to get myself situated in a new job. It’s time to step back and be a good parent.”
