Vermont tops New Hampshire

71st SHRINE MAPLE SUGAR BOWL
Vermont 26, New Hampshire 21

New Hampshire’s Austin Ingersoll tied a Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl record by scoring three touchdowns Saturday at Vermont State-Castelton, but Vermont quarterback Jack McCoy was equally impressive.

McCoy, Vermont’s Gatorade Player of the Year last fall, tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Mason Boudreau with 3:12 to play that helped Vermont defeat New Hampshire 26-21 in the 71st edition of the annual high school all-star game.

McCoy, who led Burr and Burton to the Division I state championship last fall, completed 13 of 21 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, and also carried the ball 12 times for 49 yards.

Ingersoll, who graduated from Sanborn Regional, helped New Hampshire take a 21-13 lead when he scored on a 48-yard run with 10:54 to play. Ingersoll also scored on a 56-yard run in the first quarter, and on a 54-yard interception return with 11:05 to play. Windham’s Seamus Ross made the PAT following the defensive touchdown to put New Hampshire in front 14-13.

New Hampshire’s Gavin Clark recovered the inside kick following Ingersoll’s interception return, and Ingersoll scored his third TD on the next play from scrimmage.

Vermont’s comeback began when Jamison Couture scored his second TD of the game on a 5-yard run with left. Trinity’s Bobby Kinsella broke up the pass attempt on the two-point conversion that would have tied the game.

New Hampshire’s final possession began on its own 35 with 3:05 left, but Vermont forced a turnover on downs with 1:27 to play.

The loss left New Hampshire with a 50-18-2 lead in the series.

New Hampshire led 7-6 after one quarter, but Vermont had a 13-7 advantage at halftime.

Vermont struck first when Couture found the end zone from a yard away with 6:39 remaining in the opening quarter. The TD was set up by a 29-yard pass play from McCoy to Brody Tyburski on a third-and-15 play.

New Hampshire answered on the first play of its ensuing drive. Ingersoll broke free and scored on a 56-yard run. Ross connected on the point-after kick, which put New Hampshire in front 7-6 with 6:21 left in the quarter.

Vermont came up with an interception on New Hampshire’s next possession and cashed in when Boudreau caught an 11-yard TD pass from McCoy with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter. Jackson Gillett’s PAT capped the first-half scoring.

McCoy passed for 2,055 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, when he averaged 10.3 yards per completion. He also rushed for 1,243 yards.
