New Hampshire Football Report

Preview: Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl

71st SHRINE MAPLE SUGAR BOWL
New Hampshire vs. Vermont

When and where: Saturday (11:30 a.m.) at Vermont State-Castleton.
Coaches: Matthew Trombly (Hartford) is Vermont’s head coach. Josh White (Sanborn) is coaching New Hampshire.
2022 Result: Vermont won, 28-6.
Series: New Hampshire leads the series 50-17-2
Noteworthy: The key to winning this game often comes down to which team has the more cohesive offense, since the teams have only one week to prepare. New Hampshire held Vermont to nine points in its three most recent victories, but Vermont ended that three-game losing streak with a 28-6 victory last summer. “Given the time we had to prepare, we’re OK,” New Hampshire coach Josh White said. “You’re not going to get to all the details in one week. In order for us to win the game it’ll come down to controlling the football, limiting any big plays on special teams and winning the turnover battle.”  … Logan Ash (Newport), Ben Cardoso (Sanborn), Tim Hersom (Pinkerton), Hutch Haskins (Gilford-Belmont) and Keaton Beck (Laconia) have been selected as New Hampshire’s captains. … White said most players on the roster are prepared to play on both sides of the ball, but Hersom and Kennett quarterback Brody Nagle will not be used on defense. … Quarterback Jack McCoy (Burr and Burton) was Vermont’s Gatorade Player of the Year last season. He passed for 2,055 yards and rushed for 1,243 as a senior. “He can throw the ball, but he likes to run,” White said. “He’s elusive and he’s quick, but we have a pretty good defense.” … The game will feature 12-minute quarters. … The teams have split eight meetings since the game was moved to Castleton. … Saturday’s game can be seen on nsnsports.net.
