Shrine Practice: Day 5

Logan Ash (Newport), Ben Cardoso (Sanborn), Tim Hersom (Pinkerton), Hutch Haskins (Gilford-Belmont) and Keaton Beck (Laconia) have been selected as New Hampshire’s captains  for Saturday’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. The game will be played at Vermont State-Castleton and has an 11:30 a.m. kickoff.  …  The first Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl was played in 1954 at Nashua’s Holman Stadium. … Quarterback Jack McCoy (Burr and Burton) was Vermont’s Gatorade Player of the Year last season. He passed for 2,055 yards and rushed for 1,243 as a senior. Champlain Valley’s Oliver Cheer gives Vermont another capable QB. Cheer accounted for 27 TDS (21 passing) last season. … Salem’s Max Jacques holds the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl record for yards rushing in a game (248). … Saturday’s game will have 12-minute quarters. … New Hampshire leads the series 50-18-2. … Tickets for Saturday’s game are $12 (ages 5 and under are free) and can be purchased through the Shrine Football Office by calling (603) 448-1042.
