Hawks, Ravens come up short

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  — Quarterback John Michalski completed 10-of-16 passes for 86 yards and carried the ball 17 times for 71 yards to help Sacred Heart beat Saint Anselm 10-3 on Saturday.

Sacred Heart (1-1) is playing as an FCS independent after moving into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which doesn’t sponsor football.

Sacred Heart’s two scoring drives each ended with less a minute remaining in the first half.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring following a 16-play drive that took over seven minutes on a 29-yard field goal by Matt Kling. Saint Anselm fumbled the ball away four plays later and Xavier Leigh capitalized on a 3-yard TD.

Saint Anselm’s lone score came on a 42-yard field goal by Patrick Carroll early in the final quarter.

Saint Anselm (0-1) was held to nine first downs and 88 total yards.

BRYANT 21, FRANKLIN PIERCE 17

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Jarrett Guest passed for 282 yards and connected with Landon Ruggieri for three touchdowns as Bryant beat Franklin Pierce 21-17 Saturday.

Bryant trailed 17-14 midway through the fourth quarter before Fabrice Mukendi highlighted a 10-play drive with an 18-yard run and Ruggieri capped it with a 9-yard TD reception with 4:02 left.

Bryant was forced to punt with 1:58 left to give the Ravens one more chance at a game-winning drive. Adrian Parker found Joziah Gonzalez for a 22-yard grab on third down and he also completed a 16-yard pass on third-and-15. The Ravens (0-1) got to their 46 before two incompletions ended the threat.

Guest was 26 of 41 with nine completions going to Ruggieri, who had 129 yards. Mukendi carried 10 times for 62 yards for Bryant (1-1).

Adrian Parker was 28 of 50 for 268 yards and a touchdown. Jahmir Dixon caught five passes for 89 yards and a TD.

Franklin Pierce took a 14-7 lead on a 52-yard touchdown from Parker to Dixon early in the third quarter.

Guest helped Bryant tie the game 14-14 midway through the third quarter on a 20-yard pass to Ruggieri, but Franklin Pierce answered with a 32-yard field goal.
