Exeter 36, Nashua North 0

NASHUA – Exeter High School’s Straight-T offense is at its best when the fullback trap is picking up big chunks of yardage, and the Blue Hawks ran that play with a lot of success Friday night.

Senior fullback Tyler Bland ran for 137 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries as Exeter beat Nashua North 36-0 and raised its Division I record to 2-0.

In addition to his 5-yard TD run that helped Exeter take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, Bland’s night included runs of 21, 13, 54 and 24 yards.

“The trap is the fastest-hitting play and I love it when I pop it,” Bland said. “I thought it was going to hit well the way the linebackers were filling their gaps, and it did hit really well.”

Exeter, the No. 4 team in the Union Leader Power Poll, scored on each of its four first-half possessions.

“You want to attack the midline, you want to attack off-tackle, you want to attack the perimeter,” Exeter coach Bill Ball said. “It (the trap) is part of the whole deal, and Tyler’s a smart kid and a very good athlete. We’re lucky to have him.

“We have a lot of respect for these guys (North) and this is always a tough place to play. Happy with the effort.”

Here’s more bad news for future Exeter opponents: Despite their run-heavy offense, the Blue Hawks also had a 123-85 edge in passing yards. Starting quarterback Michael Caron threw a 50-yard TD pass to Sam Dulac, and backup QB Tyler Ream tossed a 21-yard TD pass to Garrett White. Caron completed 4-of-5 passes for 102 yards and a TD.

The Blue Hawks also received a 13-yard touchdown run from halfback Jack Kavanaugh, and a 2-yard TD run from halfback Charlie Dulac (Sam’s brother).

“It’s such a tough offense to stop, it really is,” North coach Chad Zibolis said. “We were in places and we weren’t making tackles. At some points it looked like we were getting out of the way, and that’s not the way we play football. The whole team in general has to do a better job – coaches, players, everything.”

North (0-2) has scored three points in its two losses. North quarterback Jack Canaway completed 11-of-19 passes for 85 yards, but the Titans ran one play inside the Exeter 20-yard line.

“I want to run the football,” Zibolis said. “We gotta take a long look in the mirror and decide what we need to do – decide what kind of football team we want to be, because right now it’s not working.”
