UNH climbs to No. 19

The Montana State Bobcats must be enjoying the fun of exclaiming, “Were No. 1!”

They’ve gone from being No. 1 in the Big Sky Conference standings to receiving the No. 1 seed in the FCS playoffs to having the No. 1 ranking in the final regular-season Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll.

On Saturday, coach Brent Vigen’s Bobcats (12-0) beat archrival Montana 34-11 to remain as the FCS’ only unbeaten team. They received 51 of the 56 first-place votes while rising to the top ranking in the national media poll for the first time since Nov. 14, 2011.

It comes after North Dakota State, which had been No. 1, lost at South Dakota 29-28. The Bison (10-2) dropped to No. 3, just above No. 4 USD (9-2), with two-time defending FCS champion South Dakota State (10-2) moving up to No. 2.

Each of those three MVFC champions received at least one No. 1 vote.

A national media panel selects the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.

The final poll will be released on Jan. 7, the day after the FCS championship game.
