New Hampshire Football Report

The Maine problem …

For the past three seasons many NHIAA Division I football programs have filled their open date by scheduling a game against a Class A opponent from Maine, but those inter-state matchups are in jeopardy this season.

The Maine Principals’ Association has voted to approve a recommendation that would move two programs — Deering and Massabesic — from Class B to Class A. That would give Class A 14 teams.

As a result, the Class A playoffs could expand and eliminate one week from the regular season. If that happens, Maine teams may not be able to have New Hampshire opponents on their schedule for Maine’s next two-year cycle, which begins in the fall.

The following Division I/Class A matchups were played last season:

Exeter vs. Portland
Dover vs. Sanford
Portsmouth/Oyster River vs. Oxford Hills
Spaulding vs. Edward Little
Winnacunnet vs. Bangor
Bedford vs. Thornton Academy
