Lee taking Windham job

Matt Lee is leaving his position as Alvirne’s varsity football coach, but he’s not going far. Lee was approved as the varsity football coach at Windham on Tuesday night.

Alvirne and Windham both compete in Division I Central. He’s the first Division I head coach to take a head coaching job at another Division I school since Dante Laurendi left Merrimack to become Nashua North’s head coach in 2015.

“There’s not a lot of places that I would have left Alvirne for, but Windham is one of them,” Lee said. “The resources at Windham are great. The school excels in academics as well at athletics. This is a place where I want to have a long-term home.”

Lee has spent 11 seasons as an assistant at Greater Lowell Tech in Tyngsboro, Mass., before he was hired at Alvirne before the 2023 season. Alvirne went 5-5 and lost to Nashua North in the Division I first round in 2023, and finished 7-4 following a loss to Bedford in the Division I quarterfinals last season.

Lee, 36, said he will continue to teach at Greater Lowell Tech.

“I really appreciate the administration at Alvirne taking a chance on me,” Lee said. “I also want to thank all the kids who played for us the last two years. It was short term, but those were two great teams to coach.”
