Gentine takes over at Hanover

It’s been a busy offseason in terms of NHIAA coaching movement, and Hanover High School is among the schools that will enter the 2025 season with a new head coach.

Jon Gentine, 44, has been hired to replace Sam Cavallaro, who resigned as Hanover’s head coach following the 2024 season. Gentile was an assistant on Cavallaro’s staff for seven seasons, and served as the Richmond Middle School head coach for the last two seasons.

Gentine, who teaches at Hanover High School, said Cavallaro encouraged him to apply for the job.

“Of course my wife and I had a lot of discussions about what this would end up looking like,” Gentine said. “My kids are in the area. I enjoy coaching. It just seemed like a logical move. I’m excited about it, too.”

Gentine resides in Norwich, Vt. He said the assistant coaches on Cavallaro’s staff last season all agreed to return this year.

Gentine played high school football in Wisconsin, and then played as a walk-on wide receiver at Notre Dame. He coached at Marist High School in Chicago and at the Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J., before he moved to New Hampshire in 2015.

“There’s going to be some changes as far as the offense is concerned,” he said. “As a former wide receiver I have a propensity for throwing the ball a little more often. We’re gonna try and stretch things out a little bit.”

Gentine said so far he’s been happy with the participation in the offseason weightlifting program.

“The reality is we have a lot of multi-sport athletes,” he said. “I understand a lot of kids are playing other sports, which is great. I want them to. But at the same time we have to get stronger. And, more than anything else, the culture is built in the weight room in the offseason, right? That’s where trust is built.”

Hanover missed the playoffs last year when Manchester West scored the game-winning touchdown on the final play of the last regular season game for each team.
