“The youth and inexperience that we have, I think it’s exciting,” Santos said. “I think it’s an opportunity for a lot of growth. If how hard we worked this summer is any indication, I think we’ve got a shot to be a really good football team. We had record numbers up here (in Durham during the summer). Guys sacrificing, getting bigger, faster, stronger.”

When questioned about any freshmen who have looked impressive, Santos mentioned the following players:

— linebacker Caden True (Deerfield Academy)

“He’s somebody who should certainly give us depth at the second level,” Santos said. “I don’t know if he’s ready to crack the starting lineup yet, but I would imagine he’d be on two or three special teams. He’s doing a really good job.”

— defensive lineman Mason Smith (The Kiski School)

Mason Smith is someone coming in from Kiski Prep, he’s from Philly. He’s done a phenomenal job. I think he’s going to add some rotation to the defensive line position. He plays defensive end.”

“Those guys in particular have really stepped up and done a great job. ”

— defensive back Kelby Hampton  (Salisbury School)

Kelby Hampton is another one of note. He plays corner for us. Done a really good job. Really fluid. Had two interceptions in practice for us (Tuesday).”
