Few changes in FCS poll

Surprisingly, preseason No. 5 UIW may have to play the role of spoiler in the Southland Conference title race instead of chasing a second consecutive championship.

The good news for the Southland is there’s a competitive race with multiple contenders and FCS playoff hopefuls.

On Monday, Lamar rose three spots to No. 17 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll – the program’s all-time high ranking. Stephen F. Austin also re-entered the national media rankings at No. 25, while Southeastern Louisiana was just two spots outside of them.

That trio is a combined 12-1 against FCS competition, with SFA’s loss coming against a nationally ranked opponent, Abilene Christian. Lamar (5-1) is riding a five-game winning streak that is its longest since the 2018 Cardinals won six in a row on the way to their program’s only FCS playoff appearance.

UIW (2-4) had designs on a deep playoff run this season, but it has started 0-2 in the Southland, falling to Nicholls and SFA.

The top seven teams in the poll remained in the same order after all won games this past weekend. Top-ranked North Dakota State (6-0) and No. 2 South Dakota State (6-0) seek to remain perfect this week, leading into their Oct. 25 showdown.

The Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll is released each Monday during the regular season and one day after the FCS championship game (to be played Jan. 5 in Nashville, Tennessee). A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.
