Hillsboro-Deering 34, Mascoma 20

DIVISION IV CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Top-seeded Hillsboro-Deering dug itself out of a 14-point deficit by scoring the final 28 points during a 34-20 triumph over second-seeded Mascoma Valley in Saturday’s Division IV championship game at Laconia High School.

The game’s key play came at the end of the third quarter, when Hillsboro-Deering faked a field goal and quarterback Josh Perron tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chase Owen.

The TD came on the final play of a 19-play, 80-yard drive that ate up the time in the entire third quarter and trimmed second-seeded Mascoma’s lead to 20-12.

Running back Robert King gave Hillsboro-Deering (8-1) the lead on a 52-yard TD run with 9:11 to play. He added the tw0-point conversion, which put Hillsboro-Deering up 27-20.

King finished the game with 205 yards rushing and two TDs on 21 carries.

Fullback Daniel Richard (14 carries for 85 yards and two TDs) scored the game’s final TD on a 6-yard run.

Micah Adams and Tony Harris each had 11 tackles for Hillsboro-Deering. Adams also had an interception that set up the final TD.

After King opened the scoring with a 60-yard run, Mascoma (6-2) built a 20-6 lead on TD runs by Paxton Roberts (3 and 20 yards) and Declan Lyons (10 yards).

Mascoma, last year’s Division IV champion, also dropped a 26-14 decision to Hillsboro-Deering during the regular season.
