Kimball takes control at Kingswood

If you could peek into Matt Kimball’s closet and take a look at his wardrobe you’d likely see a lot of green.

After playing at Dover High School and then serving as an assistant coach for the Green Wave, Kimball has taken over as the head coach at Kingswood High School, a Division II program that wears Hunter green on game days.

Kimball, 35, said he was coaxed into applying for the Kingswood job by a friend whose son plays flag football in the Wolfeboro area.

“I was helping out with youth flag and a couple people asked me about working at the school,” Kimball said. “I decided: ‘I’ll put my hat in the ring.'”

Kimball replaces Cory Woodsome, who spent two seasons as Kingswood’s head coach but resigned after the 2025 season to become the head coach at Massabesic High School in Waterboro, Maine. Massacbesic is Woodsome’s alma mater.

Kingswood was allowed to move from Division II to Division III for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but returned to Division II in 2024, Woodsome’s first season. Kingswood finished the 2024 season with a 3-6 record, but the Knights advanced to the Division II playoffs last season. Kingswood’s season ended following a 14-7 loss to Plymouth in the Division II quarterfinals.

“The program took some big steps in the last couple years and that’s a credit to Cory,” Kimball said. “We’re hoping to build off that.”

Kimball is a Rochester resident who spent seven season on Eric Cumba’s staff at Dover. He has also coached middle school football.

“When I was at Dover I was around great football guys like Cumba and Hebert (defensive coordinator Kevin Hebert) — super-knowledgeable coaches,” Kimball said. “I know before Cory took over there was about 20-plus years where there hadn’t been a lot of success at Kingswood, but the kids are super-motivated. They want to be successful.”
