Vezza collects weekly awards

Sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza (Elmhurst, Ill.) of the University of New Hampshire football team has been named the CAA Football co-Offensive Player of the Week and the New England Football Writers Association Week 9 Gold Helmet Award recipient.

Vezza threw for career highs of 280 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a career-high 99 yards to lead UNH to a 34-24 win against William & Mary at Wildcat Stadium on Oct. 25.

Vezza engineered six scoring drives on eight possessions – the other two possessions ended in a missed 50-yard field goal attempt and end of the game – as the Wildcats did not punt. With just under two minutes left in the game, he secured the win with a four-yard run on 4th-and-2 at the WM 42.

Vezza’s 63-yard TD pass tied the score, 7-7 at 8:52 of the first quarter and his 17-yard touchdown toss established the first double-digit lead of the game, 24-14, at 8:03 of the third quarter. A 48-yard score reestablished a 10-point advantage, 31-21, with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

UNH’s offense recorded season highs in points, total yards (512), rushing yards (232) and passing yards (280).
