CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of New Hampshire sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza has been named this week’s recipient of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Fooball Foundation.

It is the second weekly Gold Helmet Award of the season for Vezza, who was previously honored Oct. 26.

Vezza threw for career highs of 328 yards and five TD passes to propel UNH to a 42-14 victory at Bryant University on Nov. 15. Vezza’s 27 completions also marked a personal best (on 36 attempts) and he finished with a 191.8 QBR.

Vezza led UNH to a touchdown each of the first four drives of the game to fuel a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter. On those four drives, Vezza completed 12 of 13 passes for 216 yards and four TDs. UNH had 252 total yards of offense at that point.

Vezza threw 35- and 5-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter to help build a 14-0 lead. After Bryant scored on the opening play of the second quarter, Vezza responded with a career-long 72-yard pass for a TD to reestablish a 14-point lead, 21-7. On the Wildcats’ next drive, he was a perfect 6-for-6 for 60 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown toss.

UNH, winners of four consecutive games and ranked No. 25 in this week’s Stats Perform Poll, ends the regular season against the University of Maine at Wildcat Stadium on Nov. 22 (1 p.m.).
