UNH announces incoming recruits

DURHAM – University of New Hampshire coach Sean McDonnell announced Wednesday that 15 student-athletes signed letters of intent on National Signing Day to attend UNH and play football for the Wildcats.

“I’m very excited about the 15 young men we have signed to a national letter of intent, McDonnell said. “These guys fit the needs of the University of New Hampshire football program. I think they’re very athletic and have great potential to carry on the UNH Football tradition. It’s a great day for the Wildcats.”

Here is a list and a synopsis of each member of the Wildcats’ signing class:

Alonzo Addae is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound DB/WR from St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario, and Peddie School in Highstown, N.J. As a senior at St. Mary’s, Addae tallied 10 interceptions and 43 tackles as a defensive back while hauling in 14 touchdowns as a wide receiver. During his postgraduate season at Peddie School, Addae racked up 12 TDs and snared four interceptions. He was subsequently named to the All-MAPL First Team and to the NJ.com 2015 All-Prep First Team.
McDonnell:
“Alonzo’s a talented, two-way defensive back who could play corner or safety for us. He has very good skills covering receivers and also has a knack for tackling. He’ll help us with secondary depth.” Jacob Bradshaw is a 6-foot-1, 265-pound DL/OL from Damascus High School in Damascus, Md. Last season he registered 41 tackles, including 21 solo stops, 14 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Bradshaw, a consensus All-State offensive lineman, was named to the All-Montgomery County 3A First Team on both sides of the ball. Additionally, he was named All-Sentinel First Team and USA Today All-Maryland on OL, DMVelite All-Maryland Third Team on DL, and to the Washington Post All-Met Second Team.
McDonnell:
“Jacob is a talented, two-way lineman. We look for him to add strength, size and athleticism to the interior defensive line position for us.”

Brian Carter, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound DE/TE, was a two-way standout at Saint Edward’s School in Vero Beach, Fla., who capped an outstanding career with 35 tackles, including 10 TFL and four sacks in just a five-game senior campaign. On the other side of the ball, Carter compiled 160 rushing yards, 69 yards receiving and two TDs. He was named All-District 19 First Team and garnered All-State Class 2A First Team from the Florida High School Athletic Association and the Sunshine State Athletic Conference at DE. Additionally, he was named the District 19 2A Player of the Year and was an All-State Second Team tight end. As a junior, Carter was First-Team All-District 19 and earned All-State Second Team recognition after posting 15 sacks, 29 TFL and 68 total tackles in addition to 268 receiving yards on 11 catches and two TDs. For his career, Carter totaled 159 tackles, 28 sacks, 74 TFL, 36 catches, 602 receiving yards and 10 TDs.
McDonnell:
“Brian is an outstanding two-way player at both defensive end and tight end. He displays great speed and athleticism off the edge, and we love his ability to get to the quarterback. On offense he can catch the ball and run with it.”  

DeUnte Chatman is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound LB/RB who attended Summer Creek High School in Houston, Texas, before playing as a two-way starter in a postgraduate season at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn. Chatman was a two-time All-District First Team selection at Summer Creek who holds school records for rushing touchdowns and single-season rushing yards. As a senior, he recorded back-to-back 200-yard rushing games and averaged more than 8.0 yards/carry. He was ranked as one of the Top 50 Players in All-Greater Houston and earned the No. 1 SPARQ Rating in Texas. Chatman also lettered in wrestling and track and field. At Loomis Chaffee, Chatman compiled 1,132 rushing yards and 16 TDs on 92 carries (12.3 yards/carry) in his postgraduate season; on defense, he posted 76 tackles and 34 tackles for loss, including 16 sacks.
McDonnell:
“This kid is a powerful linebacker who was an outstanding running back in high school and in prep school. DeUnte saw time at both linebacker and defensive end at Loomis Chaffee. A strong, physical player who has a great nose for the football and can tackle well.”

Jelani Greene is a 6-foot, 175-pound WR/DB who starred at Newfield High School in Selden, N.Y., where he was named the National Football Foundation’s top WR on Long Island. Greene led New York in punt-return yards and registered the longest punt return for a TD (90 yards) on Long Island in 2015. He was named All-Division, All-County, All-Long Island, All-State, All-Tri State Honorable Mention and he earned a berth in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl. He tallied 38 receptions for 693 yards and nine touchdowns and added five more TDs on punt returns.
McDonnell:
“Jelani is a talented receiver. His athleticism and speed, along with his hands, make him a threat to catch the ball and run after the catch. He’s also an outstanding kick and punt returner who returned five punts for TDs last year.”

Steven Harper is a 6-foot, 200-pound LB from Roselle, N.J., and Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, N.J. Harper, the first Division I prospect to come out of Hudson Catholic since 2009, compiled more than 400 tackles over his career. Last season he racked up 107 tackles, five forced fumbles, two interceptions and two defensive touchdowns. He was named to the All-State Second Team, All-County First Team, All-Area First Team and garnered the Defensive Player of the Year award.
McDonnell:
“Steven’s a very athletic linebacker prospect who will probably play the ‘buck’ position for us. He can run and get to the football. He has a nose for making plays and getting the ball out of people’s hands. He has the ability to find the ball and make the tackle.”

Evan Horn is a versatile, multi-sport athlete from Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pa. The 6-foot, 185-pound DB/WR was a four-time captain for the Falcons who was a three-time All-Lancaster-Lebanon League honoree. He helped lead CCHS to a PIAA District playoff appearance in 2015, when he was named the Lancaster-Lebanon WR of the Year. In 2013, Horn was feted as the Lancaster-Lebanon DB of the Year. In basketball, Horn is a three-time league MVP, three-time All-Lancaster-Lebanon First Team representative and four-time All-County selection who has eclipsed 1,000 career points. The three-sport athlete is a three-time Lebanon County javelin champion for the Falcons track and field team.
McDonnell:
“Evan Horn might be the best all-around athlete that we’ve recruited. As a football player, terrific defensive back, player of the year, safety prospect for us. As a basketball player, MVP three times, and an outstanding javelin thrower. His athleticism and his instincts, especially his football IQ, are very good.”

Sam Kowal is a 6-foot-4, 270-pound OL/DL from North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, N.J. In his senior year, Kowal paved the way for a 1,000-yard running back and an offense that chalked up 290.8 yards of total offense per game. The three-year starter and senior captain garnered First Team Mid-State 38 honors and Hunterdon County All-Area First Team recognition. In addition, he was tabbed to the Courier News All-Area Second Team on the offensive line.
McDonnell:
“We saw Sammy in a couple of different camps. We feel very good about his size, athleticism and his physicalness. He’s a big kid who has a good frame and long wing span who will help us in pass protection on the offensive line.”

Emmanuel “Pop” Lacey is a DB/WR who played a post-graduate year at Kent School in Kent, Conn., last season after attending Berks Catholic High School in Reading, Pa. At Kent, the 6-foot, 190-pound Lacey was an outstanding two-way player who was selected to the All-Erickson League First Team at wide receiver and safety. He registered 56 total tackles, including 27 solo stops, forced three fumbles and was named the team’s defensive MVP. As a senior in high school, he was named to the All-Berks Conference First Team and won the Maxwell Award. Lacey also lettered in basketball and baseball, where he was an All-Berks Conference First Team outfielder.
McDonnell:
“Pop is another kid that I think will add great depth to our secondary. He’s a strong, physical player at 190 pounds right now. He can tackle, has a nose for the ball, and he runs the alley from the safety position very well.”

Elijah Lewis comes to Durham from William Penn High School in New Castle, Del. The 6-foot-1, 270-pound DL/OL was a three-year starter for the Colonials on both sides of the ball. In 2014, Lewis led his team to the Delaware state championship and last season the team boasted the state’s No. 3 ranking, which included a 9-2 record (8-0 conference mark). He notched 72 total tackles and eight sacks as a senior and was named All-Conference and All-State. Lewis is also a key contributor on the Penn High track and field team, where he specializes in the shot put.
McDonnell:
“Elijah is another two-way lineman for us. He has a knack for finding the football and has power and explosiveness coming off the ball. He will add depth to both the defensive and offensive line.”

Nick Lorden, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound WR/DB, stays in the Granite State after a tremendous career at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, N.H. Lorden made 41 catches for 840 yards and 17 touchdowns to earn All-Conference First Team recognition from NHFootballReport.com last season. Lorden was also named to the USA Today All-State First Team and earned a berth on the West roster in the CHaD East-West All-Star Game. As a member of the Bishop Guertin track and field team, he was the high jump runner-up in the 2015 NHIAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
What Coach Mac says:
“Nick is an outstanding wide receiver prospect. We’ve been fortunate to see him over the last year grow and get better all the time. He has a big, huge frame and can go up and get the ball. He can catch, and he can fight for the ball on the perimeter.”

Christian Lupoli is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Conn. As a senior captain last season, the signal caller led his team to the Class L state championship game, earned All-State First Team honors, was named to the All-Conference First Team and was tabbed to the All-Levi Jackson Team. Lupoli, the Conference Player of the Year, completed 129 of 210 pass attempts (61.4 percent) for 1,705 yards and 15 touchdowns for a 99.0 QB rating, while adding 679 rushing yards on 128 attempts (5.3 yards/carry). He had three games rushing for over 100 yards. Notre Dame qualified for the Class L playoffs, beating Harding, before losing to eventual champion New Canaan in the semifinals. Lupoli, who played occasionally as a freshman, became entrenched as Notre Dame’s starter as a sophomore and helped lead the school to back-to-back nine win seasons as a junior and senior. He accumulated an overall record of 23-13 in his three years as a starter while throwing for 4,545 yards and rushing for 1,789. He threw 39 touchdown passes and ran for 16 more in his final three seasons. Lupoli also is a member of the varsity golf team at Notre Dame.
McDonnell:
“Christian fits the mold of the dual-threat quarterbacks we’ve had here at UNH. He’s a talented, all-around athlete who can throw the ball very well and be a factor in the running game, making him a two-dimensional threat for us. He possesses great accuracy and athleticism.”

Colin Maguire is a 6-foot-3, 255-pound OL/DL from Starr’s Mill High School in Fayetteville, Ga. The All-Fayette County and All-Region lineman finished off an outstanding career by helping Starr’s Mill post an 11-2 record and reach the third round of the Georgia state playoffs. Maguire was a four-year starter who began his senior season as a tight end. Midway through the season he converted to offensive tackle and helped the running game amass nearly 3,700 rushing yards. The versatile lineman saw action at guard, center and tackle. Maguire is also a member of the Starr’s Mill basketball team and a discus and shot put thrower for the track and field team.
McDonnell:
“This kid has great potential. Colin is a big kid who has played tight end, tackle, center and guard. He’s versatile, he has a large frame and will grow into it to become a big, strong offensive lineman for us.”

Matt Mascia is a 6-foot-2, 300-pound OL/DL from East Meadow High School in East Meadow, N.Y. Mascia was a two-time member of the All-Nassau County Team and improved from an All-Long Island Second Team offensive lineman in 2014 to First Team the following year, when he also garnered New York State Sportswriters Association All-State First Team honors. Mascia, who received the Roy Kessenich Award as the most outstanding three-sport student-athlete (baseball, track and field) on Long Island, was a member of the National Football Foundation Golden Eleven, Madison Square Garden Tri-State Heisman Team Honorable Mention, USA Today All-New York Second Team, and was runner-up for the Martone Award as the best lineman in Nassau County.
McDonnell:
“Matt is another talented, all-around athlete that’s playing on our offensive and defensive line. He’s played numerous positions on offense –center, guard and tackle. We believe that his athleticism, his size and power will give us added depth and strength to the interior positions of the offensive line.”

Prince Smith, Jr. is a DB/WR from Imhotep Institute Charter High School in Philadelphia. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Smith capped off a stellar senior season with 40 tackles, 14 pass breakups and four touchdowns for the first Philadelphia Public League school to win a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA state championship. Smith spearheaded a secondary that pitched seven shutouts and ranked 10th in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings. He was tabbed to the All-Public League First Team at defensive back and scored touchdowns receiving, rushing and on an interception return. Smith, who also letters in track and field, finished his high school career with 29 TDs and 10 INTs.
McDonnell:
“Prince is a very talented DB/WR prospect for us. Last year, moving strictly to the defensive side of the ball, he had an outstanding year. He has a nose for the ball, as shown by his 10 INTs, and he has a knack for putting the ball in the end zone with 29 career TDs between receiving and returning. He is a talented, long-armed corner who will help us cover people in the future here.”
