UNH offers Exeter’s Long

Note: Long added an offer from the University of Massachusetts on Sunday.

Exeter High School tight end Hunter Long has gained 30 pounds since the end of his senior season (he’s now 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds), and it seems to be paying off.

Long received a scholarship offer — his first offer — from Fordham last month, and the University of New Hampshire extended an offer to Long on Friday night.

Two University of New Hampshire assistant coaches — Chris Zarkoskie and Scott James — saw Long at a Rutgers camp Wednesday.

“I always had confidence that I could play Division I,” Long said. “I had the height, but every tight end I watched (in college) weighed 230, 240 or more. I figured if I could add weight without losing speed it would improve my situation.”

Long recently took an unofficial visit to Boston College. He said Rutgers, BC and Temple are among the schools showing interest. Long said he plans to attend camps at Massachusetts, Connecticut and BC this month.

Long will play for Deerfield Academy next season. Former Exeter and UNH offensive lineman Brian Barbato is Deerfield’s head coach.

“UNH is definitely a school I would consider going to,” Long said. “I’m just excited that things are finally picking up and I’m getting the opportunity to play at the D1 level. That’s always been my dream. It’s definitely exciting.”
