In a game that featured plenty of offense, it was a defensive play that determined the outcome and earned John Stark its first playoff berth in school history.

Junior linebacker David Hewey broke a 35-35 tie when he intercepted a pass and returned the ball 45 yards for a touchdown with a little more than a minute to play to help the Generals post a 42-35 victory over previously unbeaten Plymouth on Saturday.

The victory improved John Stark’s record to 7-0 and kept the Generals in the hunt for the top overall seed for the Division II playoffs.

John Stark quarterback Drew McQuarrie completed 24 passes for 352 yards and five touchdowns. Cooper Gorski had 10 receptions, including all five TD catches.

Plymouth led 21-7 until McQuarrie hit Gorski with a 13-yard TD pass on the final play of the first half. The Generals also scored on the first play of the second half, when McQuarrie connected with Gorski for a 57-yard TD that helped make it 21-21.

If John Stark finishes the regular season unbeaten, it will be seeded no lower than second for the quarterfinals.
