UMaine player dies during workout

UPDATE: University of Maine officials have identified the player as Darius Minor, a political science major from Locust Grove, Va.

An  University of Maine football player collapsed and died during a preseason workout on campus Tuesday afternoon.

According to a press release issued by the school the player’s identity is being withheld until the family can be notified.

“The athletics department, our student-athletes and the entire campus mourn the loss of this bright and promising member of our community,” University of Maine president Joan Ferrini-Mundy in a statement. “We ask all to keep him, his family and his friends in your thoughts through this painful time.”

Although the Maine football team isn’t scheduled to open training camp until Aug. 1, players often work out on their own during the summer.

Maine is scheduled to open its season with a home game against the University of New Hampshire on Aug. 30.

Maine head coach Joe Harasymiak was in Baltimore for Colonial Athletic Association media day on Tuesday.

The University of Maine athletic web site lists 32 freshman on the team roster.
