Sullivan sets record in loss

NEW HAVEN – Saint Anselm sophomore Ryan Sullivan set the single-game program record for tackles in Saturday’s 43-7 loss to Southern Connecticut State University at Jess Dow Field.

Sullivan posted eight individual and 12 assisted tackles versus the Owls, breaking the program record of 19 that was set twice before, most recently by Matt Horgan on Oct. 20, 2001 at Merrimack. Geoff Raby, recently inducted into the Saint Anselm Athletics Hall of Fame, also posted 19 at home against Mass.-Lowell on Sept. 8, 2001.

Saint Anselm fell to 1-3 on the year and to 1-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Southern Connecticut State improved to 3-2 overall and to 2-2 versus league teams.

Down by a 43-0 margin in the last minute of play, junior quarterback Brendan McInnis (Windham) found freshman wide receiver Andrew Duval (Goffstown) in the end zone as time expired to break up the shutout while capping a 12-play drive that spanned 1:52.

The touchdown catch was the first of Duval’s collegiate career while McInnis threw his first touchdown pass since Nov. 5, 2016 when he attended Merrimack College. The former also excelled on kickoff returns for Saint Anselm in the game, returning three for 80 yards, including a season-long 32-yarder to begin the Hawks first possession.

Saint Anselm was forced to punt on each of its first eight drives on offense, gaining less than 19 yards on all but one drive during that stretch. The host Owls posted scores on five of their first eight drives to build a 33-0 lead with 21:53 left in regulation time. Southern Connecticut State possessed the ball for over 40 minutes, limiting the Hawks to only 19:10 of possession time.

Eli Parks had two rushing touchdowns for the Owls, the first coming only minutes into the game to cap a seven-play, 87-yard drive. Vochan Fowler added a one-yard rushing score with 2:07 left in the first half and Southern Connecticut State signal-caller Matthew Sapere threw for two touchdowns to close the opening stanza with his team ahead by a 27-0 score.

Parks’ second rushing score of the day came with 6:53 to go in the third quarter and kicker Jose Conde added a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Following a Hawks punt with 5:59 to go, Jaylynn Cundiff rounded out the Owls’ scoring with a 50-yard punt return that created a 43-0 lead.

Southern Connecticut State had 21 first downs and rushed for 196 total yards. Through the air, both teams had similar numbers with the Owls barely outgaining the Hawks, 200-to-196. The major difference was in the running game for Saint Anselm – the Hawks netted only 18 yards on the ground while Southern Connecticut State running backs totaled 196 yards.

Senior captain Zack Mercer had 10 tackles for Saint Anselm and classmate Emmanuel Akinlosotu had a team-best two tackles for a loss of 4 yards. Southern Connecticut State was led by a six-tackle, one interception performance by Kwadir Delgado-McIntyre.
