Kyler, Davis collect Ivy awards

HANOVER — The Ivy League office announced its football weekly award winners this afternoon, and Dartmouth had two first-time winners among those selected in quarterback Derek Kyler as the Co-Offensive Player of the Week and place kicker Connor Davis as the Rookie of the Week. These are the first conference weekly awards for both players, but the third and fourth this season for the Big Green.

Kyler, a 6-0, 180-pound quarterback from DeKalb, Ill., led Dartmouth to a 37-14 victory over Penn — the 700th win in Big Green history — with an ultra-efficient day, completing 18-of-21 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns, plus ran twice for 17 yards. All three of his scoring strikes came in the third quarter, taking a 13-7 halftime lead and building it to a 34-7 advantage. Kyler’s 85.7 percent accuracy on his passes would rank as the highest in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) this season, but he was two completions shy of qualifying for the NCAA ranking. He does, however, lead the FCS in completion percentage for the season (75.3, 58-of-77) and sixth in passing efficiency (174.29).

Davis provided seven points to the Big Green win with four PATs as well as a 44-yard field goal — the longest by a Dartmouth kicker in seven years — In addition, the Ocala, Fla., native kicked off seven times with four landing in the end zone for touchbacks. For the season, Davis has scored 28 points, which ranks fourth in the Ivy League, with five field goals and 13-of-14 on PATs.

Kyler shared the Offensive Player of the Week award with Princeton quarterback John Lovett, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more while piling up 174 yards on the ground. Both quarterbacks were also listed as honorable mentions for STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week.

Dartmouth (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) travels to Yale (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) this week for a Friday night contest (6) that will be televised on ESPNU.

Notes: Dartmouth has more weekly awards than any other Ancient Eight team with four this season, with Columbia next with three. The previous awards earned by Big Green players both went to junior cornerback Isiah Swann as the top defender in each of the first two weeks. … Kyler’s 85.7 percent passing accuracy was the best for a Dartmouth QB since Dalyn Williams set the school record by completing 23-of-25 (92.0 percent) throws, also against Penn on Oct. 3, 2015.
