UNH, Dartmouth will tangle

The University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College announced Thursday an agreement that will see the Granite State’s two NCAA Division I football programs go head-to-head six times in eight seasons from 2021-28.

UNH will play host to Dartmouth on Oct. 16, 2021, in the teams’ 40th all-time meeting and first matchup at Wildcat Stadium, which opened in 2016, the last season in which the Wildcats and Big Green went head-to-head (Dartmouth won, 22-21, at Memorial Field on Sept. 17, 2016).

New Hampshire leads the all-time series, 19-18-2, which includes a 20-game unbeaten streak (18-0-2) from 1979-2009 and a 13-game winning streak from 1992-2009.

“As one of only two Division I schools in the state of New Hampshire, we feel it’s important to compete against Dartmouth College in all sports,” said UNH athletic director Marty Scarano. “We are delighted to be able to come to an agreement on this long-term football series.”

UNH head coach Sean McDonnell is 11-1 in his career against the Big Green.

“It’s a great opportunity to play against Dartmouth and continue the tradition of the Granite Bowl,” McDonnell said. “Having the state’s two Division I FCS teams go against each other is something that should always be done, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to play the Big Green again.”

Dartmouth had the edge in the early years of the rivalry that dates back to Oct. 2, 1901. The Big Green recorded 16 consecutive victories over the Wildcats from the initial meeting through 1972, but the Ivy Leaguers have since notched only two subsequent wins (1976, 2016).
