TOP 10 NHIAA GAMES FROM 2020
No. 8: Dover 7, Exeter 6

Dover’s season was delayed a week after its opener against Spaulding was cancelled for COVID-related reasons, but this victory may have made the wait worthwhile.

A missed extra point was the difference in this contest, as Exeter scored in the fourth quarter but failed to make what would have been the game-tying PAT. When Dover regained possession it was able to run out the clock to preserve its one-point lead.

Dover quarterback Darian Lopez-Sullivan completed 11 of 22 passes for 119 yards and added 48 yards rushing in the victory. His completions included a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Luke Geppert in the second quarter Conner Sheehan’s point-after kick handed the Green Wave a 7-0 lead.

On the game’s final drive Lopez-Sullivan completed a third-down pass to senior Ben Normandeau to pick up a first down. With 2:07 remaining and Exeter out of timeouts, Lopez-Sullivan carried the ball three straight times for another first down to end the game.

Exeter pulled within a point when quarterback Jonathan Bunnell hit tight end Billy Bloom for a 19-yard TD pass.

The loss dropped Exeter’s record to 0-2, but the Blue Hawks did exact a measure of revenge by beating the Green Wave in the first round of the Division I playoffs.
