Saint Anselm 24, Post 20

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College football team picked up a 24-20 victory on the road at Post University on Saturday in non-conference play.

The Hawks improved to 5-2, reaching five wins in a season for the first time since the 2014 campaign. Post, in its first season competing against an entirely NCAA Division II schedule, drops to 0-7 on the year.

GAME STATISTICS

Senior JC King (Fall River, Mass.) had an explosive night for the Hawks, racking up a career-high 114 yards on the ground with his first rushing touchdown of the season. Senior Anthony Brown (Belton, Texas) added a season-best 112 yards receiving on five catches with sophomore Carson Goda (Bradenton, Fla.) tallying as many receptions for 53 yards.

Saint Anselm scored on its first offensive possession and added two more touchdowns in the first half, building a 21-7 advantage at the break. Junior Blaine Burkhalter (Burnet, Texas) and Goda hauled in touchdown passes and King plunged across the goal line with a rushing score to build the 14-point lead.

Post made things interesting with two second-half touchdowns, one in the third quarter and one to start the fourth. Despite the Saint Anselm offense committing two fourth-quarter turnovers, the Hawks held on for the victory as the defense forced two punts and a game-ending turnover on downs with 1:41 to go in regulation time.

Junior Ahmad Brown (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and senior Taylor Pawelkoski (Bradenton, Fla.) tied for the team lead with six tackles apiece. Senior Max Tempchin (Silver Spring, Md.) produced five solo tackles in the victory, including two takedowns for a combined loss of six yards. Senior Devin Williams (Cliffwood, N.J.) had his team’s lone sack, a 13-yard tackle of the Post signal-caller.

Hawks quarterback Drew Willoughby (Austin, Texas) was 18-for-34 in the air, throwing two touchdowns alongside three interceptions. He moves to fifth place in the Saint Anselm record book with 421 career pass completions.

Saint Anselm returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, heading to Pace University for a 12 p.m. showdown with the Setters.
