Shrine Practice: Day 1

New Hampshire held two on-field practice sessions Sunday in preparation for Saturday’s 71st Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, which will be played at Vermont State-Castleton (11:30 a.m.). Players from New Hampshire and Vermont both reported Sunday morning. “What a great Day 1,” New Hampshire coach Josh White said. “The kids are excited to be here. We installed our base stuff and the kids picked it up quicker than I thought, so we’re ahead of schedule.” … White said Tank Christian from Stevens had to leave practice Sunday to deal with a personal situation at home and won’t be participating in the game. Londonderry’s Michael Thistle did not report to camp. New Hampshire now has a 34-player roster. … White said the coaches selected which players would room together based primarily on position. Players who will be playing on the same college team in the fall were also given the same room assignment. … Windham’s Seamus Ross will handle the kicking duties for New Hampshire. … Vermont lineman Derek Li (Otter Valley) is expected to play Saturday. Li suffered a torn meniscus in Vermont’s North/South All-Star Game. … Hartford’s Matt Trombly is Vermont’s head coach. His son Brayden is one of Vermont’s quarterbacks.  … New Hampshire is scheduled to practice three times Monday, although the final practice may be a walk-through. … “Our goals tomorrow include adding to our offense and putting in some of our shotgun stuff,” White said. “As I’ve said we’d rather do less and do it well than put in too much stuff.”
