Dartmouth drops out of Top 25

Top-ranked North Dakota State has been so consistent and dominating from week to week that it may be easy to forget the Bison are playing under a first-year coach, Tim Polasek.

The success of first-year coaches has played a big role within the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll this season. Harvard and coach Andrew Aurich were the latest combo to join the national media rankings on Monday, with the Crimson (6-1) powering in at No. 24 after handing Ivy League rival Dartmouth its first loss, 31-27 on Saturday.

In addition to NDSU and Harvard, No. 4 UC Davis (Tim Plough), No. 10 Mercer (Mike Jacobs) and No. 17 Stony Brook (Billy Cosh) are nationally ranked under a first-year coach. Earlier this season, ETSU (Tre Lamb), Florida A&M (James Colzie III) and Northern Arizona (Brian Wright) made appearances in the Top 25.

Plough will coach in arguably this week’s biggest FCS game, as Big Sky co-leader UC Davis (8-1) will visit No. 7 Montana (7-2), the defending conference champion and 2023 national runner-up.

Nine leagues have a team in the Top 25, including the Northeast Conference for the first time this season with No. 25 Duquesne. The Dukes, who are 6-2 under veteran coach Jerry Schmitt, were last ranked on April 5, 2021 during the pandemic-delayed 2020 FCS season that was held the following spring.

A national media panel selects the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.
