Mascoma 45, Raymond 0

DIVISION IV CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

It was a long wait, but the Mascoma Valley Regional football team got its revenge Saturday in the form of a 45-0 victory over Raymond in the Division IV championship game at Laconia High School.

Top-seeded Raymond beat second-seeded Mascoma 39-12 in Week 1, but the Royals (8-1)  won each of their eight games after that en route to the program’s first championship.

“The team was very excited to get the opportunity to play them again,” Mascoma coach John Daley said. “They humbled us at the beginning of the year.”

Mascoma took control early. Gareth Brown capped the game’s opening drive by catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brody Goulette. Raymond fumbled the ball away on the ensuing kickoff and Mascoma capitalized when Goulette scored on a 1-yard run. The two-point conversion gave the Royals a 16-0 lead with 1:39 remaining in the opening quarter.

Goulette, a senior, added a 6-yard TD run in the second quarter that helped extend the lead to 22-0.

Slot/fullback Ethan Lewis had two rushing touchdowns in the second half. Mascoma’s Myles Wetherbee also returned an interception 38 yards for a TD.

Raymond (8-1) scored at least 34 points in seven of its eight games entering Saturday’s contest. Mascoma’s 45-points were more than the Rams allowed in the previous eight games (39).

“Our guys played to their potential and executed their assignments,” Daley said. “On the defensive side of the ball it was all about the defensive backs communicating, knowing the coverage and where they needed to be.”

It was Raymond’s first appearance in a championship game. The Rams beat fourth-seeded Franklin 34-0 in the semifinals.

Daley played on the Mascoma team that lost to Franklin 42-22 in the 2012 Division VI championship game. That’s the only other time the Mascoma program has reached a title game.

Each of Mascoma’s eight victories came by at least 14 points. The Royals beat third-seeded Hillsboro-Deering 44-6 in the semifinals.

“The community support has been massive,” Daley said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the kids. I think that earlier loss to Raymond was the best thing that could have happened to us.”
