Windham’s Byrne resigns

Windham High School’s football season ended with Friday night’s 14-6 loss to Pinkerton Academy in the Division I quarterfinals. That game also ended Jack Byrne’s tenure as Windham’s head coach.

Byne, 41, confirmed Sunday that he has resigned as Windham’s coach, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. Byrne and his wife, Amber, have two children, a 10-year-old son (Luke) and a nine-year old daughter (Quinn).

“I’d say about halfway through the year I started thinking about (resigning),” Byrne said. “My children are in fifth grade and fourth grade and I saw how fast it was going. Plus the program is in a good spot. We had more than 100 players in the program for the first time this year. I just felt like maybe it was time to start thinking about it.

“Windham kids are the best. To compete with the teams we have to compete with they really need someone who is there before school and after school all year.”

Byrne, who lives in Litchfield, has been with the Windham football program since its inception in 2009. He served as defensive coordinator under Bill Raycraft for 10 years, and has spent the last six seasons as the program’s head coach. He was elevated to that position when Raycraft stepped down.

The Jaguars won the Division II title in 2014, and finished as the Division II runner-up in 2011 and 2015. Windham made the Division I playoffs three times (not including the COVID season) during Byrne’s time as head coach. Windham’s 8-7 upset of fifth-seeded Salem this season was the program’s first Division I playoff victory.

Byrne, who teaches in the human performance department at Windham High School, played at Tewksbury (Mass.) High School and at Tufts University. He was an assistant coach at Bedford (Mass.) High School in 2005 and at Tewksbury High in 2006, and then served as the defensive line coach at Summit High School in Breckenridge, Col., from 2007 to 2009.

“I have no plans to leave my teaching position so if people need my help I’m still there,” Byrne said. “Windham was and still is my dream job. There’s no place like it. It’s just time to turn the page, spend time with my wife and focus on my kids.”
